Ayiti Gouvènans: "Helping the communities to help themselves"
Projects

CMTS: The Community Mobilization & Training Sessions (CMTS) were both formal and informal open space sessions that took place in the localities of Dame and Mare-Rouge (county of Môle St.-Nicolas), Petite Riviere and Gran Rezen (County of Baie de Henne), Nan Dije and Vieille Terre (County of Jean-Rabel). Those sessions aimed to assisting the elected officials and community leaders in identifying community assets, analyzing community problems, assessing community data and finally leading the participants to come up with ideas and plans to improve their communities. Those trainings occurred in April 2006, July 2007, and December 2007.

NRCP: The Northwest Reforestation and Conservation Project is both an innovative and ambitious undertaking never attempted before in Haiti. With this reforestation project, 75 to 80 percent of the trees being planted are tropical fruit trees that will help improve the physical environment and provide food and income to the population. When Christopher Columbus landed in Haiti in December 1492, more than 95 percent of the Island was then covered with thick forests. Currently, only three percent of Haiti is still covered with forests. With 97 percent of its forests gone, Haiti is now in a state of environmental emergency. Today, c oncerned about the alarming and rampant deterioration of the environment in the Northwest region of Haiti, Ayiti Gouvènans has launched the Northwest Reforestation and Conservation Project [NRCP] to address the pressing issues of deforestation and its corollary: erosion, floods, drought, and deterioration of the environment. Most of the fruits (mangoes, avocados, oranges, tangerines, grapefruits, lemons, and coconut) produced will be used for both local consumption and Exportation. The fruits sold in other regions and overseas will generate income and economic stability to the Northwest region. In addition to the fruit tree seedlings, agro-forestry seedlings including oak, acacia, leucena, dale-marie, mahogany, and cedar, and other native tree will help reforest large portions of the region. The primary objective of the NRCP is to provide a minimal quantity of 50,000 seedlings quarterly to local organizations, women and youth associations eager to actively participate in the reforestation efforts undergone by their communities. Currently, 4 community nursery projects located in rural places like Nan Dije and Vieille Terre (Jean-Rabel), Mare-Rouge (Mole St.-Nicolas), and Petite Rivière (Baie de Henne) are producing seedlings to support the reforestation projects.

Upcoming Projects

AG’s upcoming projects are those awaiting either funding or final approval of the Executive Board before field activities begin. Some of the following projects are not new; they are, in fact, the second phase of initial projects.

ISCBP-II: The second phase of AG’s Institutional Strengthening & Capacity Building Project (ISCBP-II) seeks to equip the remaining 6 Communes of the Northwest Department (La Tortue, Anse a Foleur, Bassin Bleu, Port-de-Paix, Saint Louis du Nord, and Chansolme with the same technological materials that were donated by AG to the Communes of Jean-Rabel, Mole St.-Nicolas, Bombardopolis, and Baie de Henne. The ISCBP-II also aims to providing administrative tools and office supplies to the local administrators of the 23 rural towns and villages of the Upper Northwest. In the second phase of this project, both elected and community leaders will receive education and training on:

NRCP: In the second phase of the Reforestation and Conservation Project (NRCP), all 10 counties throughout the region and their 40 territorial divisions - the Seksyon Kominal -will have, at least, one nursery growing seedlings all year around. The implementation of this project will help increase tropical fruits production and restore the environment and biodiversity of the region.
