Ayiti Gouvènans: "Helping the communities to help themselves"

 

Ayiti Gouvènans (AG) is an independent and non partisan not-for-profit organization founded in January 2004 by a group of educators, agronomists, engineers, administrators, and other professionals committed to promoting sustainable development, good governance, healthcare, and education throughout Haiti. The core of Ayiti Gouvènans’ ultimate goal is to help the communities help themselves through education, awareness, empowerment, and trainings. In order to reach its goal, AG has combined an integrated and a participatory approach while providing the population with tools and skills needed to identify the underlying causes of their troubles and get involved in the search for solutions and remedy to the pressing issues of deforestation, health crisis, illiteracy, and poverty.

To address the burning issues of environmental deterioration and meet the needs for a systemic reorganization of local governments and communities all over Haiti, AG is determined to assist and work in partnership with all organizations seeking technical support and trainings. Moreover, the acute and rapid decrease in agricultural production and its corollary have helped AG to understand how crucial it is for local governments to work hand in hand with the community representatives to improve the living standards of current and future generations of Haitians.

With a variety of programs and projects designed around sustainable development and good governance, AG has been working diligently to strengthen local governments and empower communities and grassroots organizations. In the past fifty years, due to poor management of public affairs, the Haitian people have lost confidence in their governments and their capacity to deliver. Likewise, the communities have given up on themselves and have stopped working to develop and promote local production. As a matter of fact, they’ve become very dependent on foreign aid. Such dependency is the key to all of their troubles as it constitutes a major obstacle to endogenous and sustainable development. To change such an unproductive way of thinking and being, AG proposes to help raise the people’s awareness and build up their capacity and confidence.

A Haiti where where the primary needs of every citizen are met in an environment of justice and peace; government and constituants are partners in achieving major socio-economic and scientific progress.

Mission

Our mission is to promote (a) good governance, (b) leadership and endogenous (c) sustainable development in all local authorities throughout Haiti.

Objectives

• Promote and provide education in leadership and good governance throughout Haiti so current and emerging leaders can better serve their constituents.
• Assist local communities to meet their needs for food and energy without jeopardizing the environment.
• Provide local leaders with tools and techniques necessary to efficiently manage their community and resources (natural and human ).
• Promote a sustainable balance between the need for food, income, and environmental quality by providing farmers with knowledge of modern farming techniques.
• Build a national network on good governance and sustainable development through partnership with community organizations and local governments.
• Provide the local communities with opportunities to get involved in conservation efforts and in the management of natural and public resources.
